Terrible rendition of Alice Sebold's novel lacks not only the poetic spark that made it memorable but lacks its humanity as well. Major story lines that made the novel complex are completely missing and the whole purpose of the film is murky at best. Great actors like Susan Sarandon and Rachel Weisz are stranded with watered down versions of the characters they play from the book and both actresses manage to make lemonade out of lemons but both are weight down by the underhandedness of the film's script,which undercuts their efforts to bring more to their roles and the sloppy editing that makes their characters inconsistent. Its a testament to both Weisz and Sarandon on how great they are as actresses to manage to make you care about their characters but a great actor can only do but so much with flimsy material and the script really strips the humanity and complexities that their characters had in the book. Mark Wahlberg also faces the same dilemma. He gives his all but his character does not come across well, making his character more paranoid that the novel suggested and Saoirse Ronan comes across too much like a saint that the complex character the book gave. The worst served by this is Stanley Tucci, who manages to give more to his character than the script allows and its not much other than the cliché child killer, who had more substance in the book than he does in this movie.
Peter Jackson, who made great films" in the past like "Heavenly Creatures" and "The Lord of the Rings films miss the mark completely with this film. He pulls the rug from his cast feet and substitutes it with a barrage of CGI effects that not only distracts from the real story but undermines it as well. What a shame.
